High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a thermoplastic polymer made from petroleum. It is one of the most versatile plastic materials and is used in a wide variety of applications. HDPE's rigidity and tensile strength are considerably higher than those of LDPE and medium-density PE (MDPE).
Most HDPE applications are in rigid packaging, such as milk bottles and household chemicals bottles, and heavy-duty items, such as pallets, drums, crates, and intermediate bulk containers.
Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is a type of thermoplastic in the polyethylene family. It’s formed of long chains of ethylene molecules called monomers. As their names suggest, their differences lie in density. Polyethylene with a density ranging from 0.91 to 0.94 g/cc is classified broadly as low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and can be manufactured by high- or low-pressure processes.
Because LDPE is relatively transparent, it is used in film applications and where heat sealing is necessary.
Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is a substantially linear polymer with significant numbers of short branches. It has a density range of 0.910–0.920 kgm−3 and is made by copolymerization of ethylene with longer-chain olefins.
LLDPE is also a soft, flexible material with a hazy appearance and
at equal density and thickness as LDPE, LLDPE has higher impact strength, tensile strength, puncture resistance, and elongation. LLDPE is used in films and packaging due to its flexibility and toughness.
